Do You Know Who You Are?

Discover what makes you respond to situations the way you do.

Have you ever tried to write your name with the hand you don’t usually write with?

This simple exercise demonstrates to us that in expressing our abilities, it is up to us to decide what is our preference. I prefer to write with my right hand. How about you?

While we are able to write with either hand, we get best results when using the hand of our preference

While attending the Meyers-Briggs®  personal assessment workshop, I was guided to understand that when we use our natural tendency to carry ourselves, we obtain the best results.

There are four areas to discover what your preference is. Once you know them, you can identify which of the sixteen personalities type matches yours.

Myers-Briggs® calls them Type Indicator.  They are as follows:

1) Where you focus your attention

Do you focus on the outer world of people and things? or

Do you prefer the inner world of ideas and impressions?

One way to find out is by giving yourself 5 minutes to decide what are your preferred leisure activities: travel, walking, reading, music, dancing, eating out, etc.

This will determine if you fall in the Extraversion or Introversion type

2) The Way you take in information

Do you sense the information and focus on the here and now? or

Do you prefer consider the patterns, the big picture and focus on future possibilities?

Take a quick look at this leaf and think or write a few words about a leaf.

Considering your response you will discover what way you prefer when taking information in. Is it through Sensing or iNtuition?

3) The way you make decisions

Do you base your decisions on logic and on objective analysis of cause and effect? or

Do you tend to consider values and subjective evaluations?

Place yourself in a position where you have to make a difficult decision such as selecting the person who will be “receiving the pink slip” among others of equal position and performance to the organization. You value them all but have been asked to make the decision.  Will you apply Thinking or Feeling.

4) How you deal with the outer world

Do you prefer a planned and organized approach to life? or

Do you tend to like a flexible and spontaneous approach to life keeping the options open?

An easy way to figure out is to pay attention to the way you would go about planning a vacation.  Are you the Judging or the Perceiving type?

Next it’s time to chose the first letter of the word that most characterizes you out of the two on each category

E or I

      S or N

           T or F

                J or P

Voila! You then discover which of the sixteen Myers-Briggs Type Indicator® describes you the best.

I was a bit surprised about my category ENFP but nonetheless, it represents my personality accurately. Even more, only 6-7% of the American population fall under this category.

My challenge to you is to find a vehicle such as the Myers-Briggs® assessment and decide to travel into your own personality to discover your potential:

  • Strengths,
  • Weakness,
  • What you are good at and
  • What tendencies you need to watch

By understanding them you will positively interact with others and make decisions that will lead you to a life with purpose and satisfaction.

             Because you DO know who you are!

I’ve heard of the Myers-Briggs test and glad to read about your experience. I Will definitely take it next time I have a opportunity. I am curious now to find out about my type indicator. :-)

YAY! By all means take the assessment if you know when and where is available in your area. I know several persons who have taken it several times, since we tend to change as we experience life through the years. Thanks for sharing your plans and please let me know how you do. :-)

Delmy, I think I vaguely knew about the test, but not the actual name of it. Really interesting, and just by reading your post I see that I am kind of “in the middle” so to speak between letters, LOL! I guess the real test would tell :)

WOW Delia! you are great! Thanks for taking the time to go over the steps :-) There is something empowering about discovering personal positive traits. Yes taking the complete test is the most precise way to figure, but having an idea of where we fit in is a nice step forward. I appreciate your visit and sharing of your thoughts.
